|New Construction at Biathlon Center|
|The small village of Obertilliach, Austria is a popular training destination for many biathlon teams as well as a regular host of IBU Cup competitions during the winter. Obertilliach will host the 2013 IBU Youth and Junior World Championships and is now in the process of remodeling the venue.
The new construction started two weeks ago. Among the projects are an extension of the stadium tunnel and the snowmaking equipment is being moved to widen the start and finish area. This change will allow the athletes to run a loop around the stadium after the start instead of disappearing into the valley right away.
Community and Government Support
Last week , on the other side of the stadium the initial foundation work was started on a new building that will house offices, anti-doping rooms, changing rooms and a fitness room. When completed, temporary competition structures such as tribunes or containers can be erected on top of this building. OC President Christian Scherer explained, “The constant development of the venue is only possible due to the financial support of Tyrol and the ministry for sports as well as the generosity of the citizens of Obertilliach and our local institution. We want to create a functional stadium for the athletes as our contribution to the development of biathlon.”
The start and finish area will be finished in early September for t he Austrian national summer biathlon championships while the new building will be erect in only a few weeks. It will be completed next summer, together with other improvements to the venue.
Love to Come Here
The construction currently takes place while training is ongoing: top athletes rollerski by heavy machinery without interfering. On the contrary, German national coach Uwe Müßiggang praised the initiative of the biathlon village. “It is astonishing to see the development of Obertilliach as this is a very small village. It is great to see how they find the financial means again and again to improve and extend the tracks and the training center here. There’s constant development and we always love to come back.”
