World Cup Athletes on Rollerski Tracks

|2011 IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships|
|The 2011 IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, is fast approaching. Competitors from 25 nations, including several well-known World Cup regulars are expected for the rollerski sprint, pursuit and relay competitions September 22 - 25.
Kuzmina, Semerenkos, and Soukalova
Anastasiya Kuzmina from Slovakia is one of the favorites in a women’s field that includes the Ukrainian trio of Olena Pidhrushna and Vita and Valj Semerenko. The home team with Gabriela Soukalova, Veronika Vitkova and Veronika Zvaricova will also have their best athletes challenging for the medals in front of a partisan crowd. The reigning champions from Poland, Agnieszka Cyl and Krystyna Palka as well as Magdalena Gwizdon will be on hand to defend their titles. Eva Tofalvi of Romania also has podium potential.
Shipulin, Ustyugov, and Slesingr
With the best Russian women at a training camp in Russia, their male counterparts Anton Shipulin and Evgeniy Ustyugov are probably the favorites for the sprint and pursuit in Nove Mesto. However, with that all-important home crowd cheering, Michal Slesingr and his teammates will also be going for the medals. Ukrainians Andriy Deryzemlya and Artem and Roman Pryma, as well as Latvia’s Andrejs Rastorgujevs, Poland’s Tomasz Sikora and Krasimir Anev of Bulgaria will make these competitions more interesting.
Although the focus is on the senior competitions, there is also a full schedule for the juniors. Australian juniors Lucy Glanville and Alexei Almoukov, making the long trek from Down Under will be representing the southern hemisphere in those competitions.
The Organizing Committee and the volunteers from the local sports club, which owns and operates the venue, have now started the setting up in the stadium. Otakar Binder, VP of Marketing for the OC, explained that the team was well-rehearsed as Nove Mesto hosts competitions almost every weekend. Some changes have been made especially for the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships. Additional wax containers have been added for both the teams as well as the rollerski companies Marwe and SRB. At the same time, the tracks have been fenced off and a temporary bridge connecting the inside of the stadium and the shooting range was constructed.
These IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships are the last dry run before the E.ON IBU World Cup Biathlon will takes place in Nove Mesto in January 2012. In order to be ready for this event and the 2013 IBU World Championships Biathlon competitions, there is a lot of construction going on in and around the stadium. The new winter tracks are almost finished. A bridge below the road towards the stadium will be completed within the next few weeks while additional tribunes will be erected and the container village completely renovated by January. Next summer, an office building will be constructed next to the shooting range to complete the major upgrades at the stadium.
Exciting Sports Moments on Tap
At this stage, everyone in Nove Mesto is focused on the opening Mixed Relay competition at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships next Thursday. Kuzmina is already in Nove Mesto for training, and other teams are expected starting on Sunday. with the first boxes of rollerskis already delivered and waiting for the Championships to begin, Vice President of the OC Vlastimil Jakes commented, “We are happy to see that twenty-five teams are registered for the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave. We will have several national teams and a lot of Olympic medalists here. We hope that their participation together with the big effort of our organizing team means that our event will provide many exciting sport moments.”
