Kaisa Mäkäräinen: Biathlon, Music, & Summe...

As one athlete commented after Saturday’s sprint, “The intense cold and the physical effort just drained the energy out of me. When I got back to the hotel, all I wanted to do was sleep.” Yet most came back for one more competition in Sunday’s pursuit.

Before IBU World Championships

This past weekend was the last chance to get in one more good shooting stage or hard competitive effort before the IBU World Championships in Ruhpolding next month.

Magdalena and Kaisa

It was another big weekend for Magdalena Neuner as she continued her domination in the sprint and tightened her grip on the Yellow Bib. At the same time, Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen had a big weekend at home, with second in the sprint and resounding victory in the pursuit to the delight of the hometown crowd. As usual, Belarusian Darya Domracheva provided drama with comebacks in both the sprint and pursuit, while still chasing Neuner for the World Cup Total score title.

Fourcade and Björndalen

In the men’s competitions, France’s Martin Fourcade retook the Yellow Bib, with his sprint victory and second in the pursuit. The story of the weekend was Norway’s Ole Einar Björndalen who picked up his first win since Östersund 2010. That win even impressed the runner-up Fourcade who said, “I am very proud to be second to Ole Einar.”

French Team

As if the season had not been good enough for the French team, they also took the mixed relay under extremely harsh conditions, reaffirming their emphasis on team efforts.
