Sprint and Nation’s Cup Score
The IBU Cup sprint discipline score went to Germany’s Maren Hammerschmidt while the IBU Cup Nation’s Cup Score in the women’s category went to Russia.
Döll was the second to start and she took over the lead immediately and never relinquished it. Her shooting was flawless today and she explained at the finish: “I am especially happy about my shooting as I don’t shoot zero too often.” Döll, who was the sixth woman of the German team at the IBU World Championships in Ruhpolding only came to Altenberg for the weekend competitions.
Push, Push, Push
Eckhoff explained that she felt very good on the tracks today, “I just could push, push, push.“ She needed her good skiing as she had two penalties in the standing stage. Still, she managed to finish in second place and will now start 47 seconds behind Döll in tomorrow’s pursuit competition. She commented, with a smile, “If it is like today, that’s only one penalty by Döll until I catch up.”
Third place went to Korovina who had one penalty in the prone stage, despite repeatedly naming the standing shooting as her weakness during this season. However, she could not keep up on the tracks today, which were soft due to the temperatures that are clearly above freezing.
Men’s 10K Sprint
Norway’s Erlend Bjoentegaard was the fastest in the men’s sprint. He shot clean and needed just 25:57.3 to claim the win. Second place went to Russia’s Alexandr Loginov who also shot flawlessly but was 1.4 seconds back. Third place went to Bernhard Leitinger of Austria with one penalty and 15.6 seconds back.
Fourth place went to Maksim Burtasov of Russia with clean shooting, 24.8 seconds back. Behind him, Norway’s Henrik L’Abee Lund finished in fifth with two penalties, 26.1 seconds back. Sixth place went to Simon Desthieux of France with one penalty, 28.7 seconds back.
Doll and Russia
The winner of the IBU Cup discipline score in the sprint went to Germany’s Benedikt Doll who finished in seventh place today. The men’s nation’s cup score was won by Russia.
The winner smiled surprised at the finish. Erlend Bjoentegaard replied, “No,” without hesitation when asked if he expected that he could win today. “I did not compete a lot this winter because I was not good enough for the IBU Cup team. So I could train well and especially for these competitions here. But I never expected this result.”
Second-place Loginov often showed this winter how fast he is. However, now he feels the long season: “Now, at the end of the season, it is difficult. I gave my maximum today, though.” He added that tomorrow in the pursuit he plans to attack.
Hoped for Top Ten
Third place finisher Berhard Leitinger also was a surprise. The Austrian was sick at the beginning of the winter but already showed in Canmore that his shape was pointing upwards. He commented, “After Canada I only did what I liked for one week. Then, last week, I realized that the shape was good. But I hoped for a top ten result, I never expected to get onto the podium.”
While the distances between the women for the pursuit competition on Sunday are fairly big, a total of 13 men will start within the first minute. These pursuit competitions are the final ones of this 2011-12 IBU Cup season 2011.
