|Claus, Wolfgang, and Walter Pichler Interview|
|Three members of the Pichler family, are involved with these 2012 IBU World Championships here in their hometown of Ruhpolding, just as it has been since the early days of the sport here.
OC President and Ruhpolding Mayor Claus, his brother Russian Coach Wolfgang, and their cousin Walter, Great Britain Coach are truly a biathlon family. Claus and Wolfgang’s father Hans was “full of ideas” according to Claus. Hans was the person who helped bring the first biathlon competitions to the place where the Chiemgau Arena now sits. The three Pichlers all had a hand in building the earliest stadiums here. Walter remembers, “on a Friday afternoon after school, Hans would pick up a bunch of us young guys and we would come out here and cut trees.”
25 Family Members
The family has been so deeply involved in biathlon that at the 1985 World Championships, the trio recollected that 25 family members were volunteers. Over the years the three have “done it all.” Wolfgang was at one time in charge of volunteer clothing, “the first time we ever had the same clothes for volunteers,” while as a teenager, Claus was the media chief. Walter became the world-class biathlete, earning a Bronze relay medal at the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo.
Biathlonworld.com TV spent some time with this fascinating trio in the following video, “The Pichlers: A Biathlon Family.”
