Senior Pursuits to Rösch and Gregorin

Slovenia's Teja Gregorin backed up her sprint Gold yesterday with another Gold medal while Silver Sprint medalist Michael Rösch of Belgium claimed his country's first biathlon Gold in today's pursuit competitions. Gregorin, with a single penalty finished in 29:07.8, 21.6 seconds ahead of Ukraine's Valj Semerenko, while Rösch covered the 12.5K course in 32:53.1, 26.8 seconds ahead of Gregorin's teammate Klemen Bauer, with three penalties. Bronze medals went to Jialan Tang of China, 47.3 seconds back and Krasimir Anev of Bulgaria, 32 seconds back.

Gold Medals for Ilchenko, Vojik in Junior Pursuits

Heavy morning rain preceded the start today, but had no effect on the two Gold medalists in the junior pursuits. Kristina Ilchenko of Russia and Tomas Vojik of Czech Republic defended their number 1 bibs with convincing wins, despite a flurry of penalties for each. Ilchenko had six penalties, but finished in 32:31.2, 26.9 seconds ahead of Galina Vishnevskaya of Kazakhstan, with just two penalties. Similarly, Vojik, with four penalties finished in 35:47.6, 50.5 seconds ahead of Ukraine's Artem Tyshchenko, with just a single penalty.

Tyumen Biathlon Arena; a Real Pearl in Siberia Video

The 2014 IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships in Tyumen, Russia is not only a high point for the Summer Biathlon World Championships with 27 nations participating. It is also the beginning for a new host and venue for IBU events. In coming years, sparkling "Pearl of Siberia" venue will host the 2016 IBU Open European Championships and then in 2017, a World Cup competition.

More Gold for Moravec, Czech Republic; Silver to Rösch

With temperatures a couple of degrees cooler than the women faced a few hours earlier, Ondrej Moravec of Czech Republic claimed his second Gold medal of these Championships by taking the men's 10K sprint in 24:30.8 with a single penalty. Silver went to Belgium's Michael Rösch, with two penalties, 6.5 seconds back. Martin Otcenas of Slovakia won the Bronze medal, with one penalty, 12.9 seconds back. His medal was the first for his country.

Gregorin, Palka Tie for Gold in Hot Tyumen

Slovenia's Teja Gregorin and Poland's Krystyna Palka tied for Gold in today's women's 7.5K sprint which turned out to be a Siberian version of "duel in the sun" at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships in Tyumen. The two Gold medalists each missed just a single prone shot and crossed the finish line with matching times of 21:41.2 on a brilliantly sunny afternoon that followed the rainy conditions on Friday. Jialan Tang of China took the Bronze medal, also with a single penalty, but in standing, five seconds back.

Rainy Tyumen; Gold Medals for Czech Republic and Russia

After a very hot and humid first day of competition at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships in Tyumen, the weather took an about face with a rainy and 20 degree Celsius day for the junior sprints today. Raincoats and umbrellas were the order of the day for coaches, volunteers and spectators. Despite the conditions, Kristina Ilchenko of Russia, with one penalty and clean-shooting Tomas Vojik of Czech Republic claimed Gold medals.

Czech Day at IBU Summer Biathlon WCH

Sweltering temperatures accompanied by high humidity did nothing to keep the Czech Republic from dominating both the junior and senior mixed relays at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships today. The junior Czech squad starting at 15:30 local time claimed the Gold medal in 1:20:30.5, with a single penalty and 16 spare rounds while the senior Czech team was almost perfect on the shooting range with just three spare rounds in their 1:13:01.1 Gold medal effort.

Gala Opening Ceremonies and a Special Postage Stamp

Yesterday's Opening Ceremonies in Tyumen's main square kicked off this big week of competitions at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships. Both the athletes and fans enjoyed the entertainment and speeches hosted by the always entertaining sportscaster Dmitry Guberniev.

Just Before the Start in Tyumen

The 19th IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships and the ninth edition on rollerskis, was officially opened yesterday in Tyumen's main square with 27 teams and a large contingent of local fans on hand. This was the warm-up for the first ever IBU event at Tyumen's "Pearl of Siberia" stadium, one of the best facilities in the world.
