IBU Cup 6 in Osrblie

After the hard week at the IBU OECH in Otepää many athletes made a long trip to Osrblie, Slovakia for IBU Cup 6. Those competitions will be the last in the season for some athletes as a few teams are not going to Canmore, Canada.

Editor’s Choice NMNM Preview with Martin Fourcade

The competitions here in Nove Mesto na Morave kick off today, with the two mixed relays. Beyond those two mixed relays are sprints on Saturday and pursuits on Sunday. A few coaches commented on how they will approach the mixed relay, while Martin Fourcade, feeling much better than two weeks ago spoke about “getting the feeling back” in our “Editor’s Choice NMNM Preview with Martin Fourcade.”

NMNM Course Tour: Michal Slesingr; Single Mixed Relay

The Vysočina Arena will be packed with 17,000 fans plus countless others on the tracks for the tomorrow's opening competitions, the single and regular mixed relays here in Nove Mesto na Morave. Today, Michal Slesingr who will be on the mixed relay for Czech Republic, skied around the 2.5K loop in our "NMNM Course Tour with Michal Slesingr."

Break Over, Next Up: 3 Competition Days in NMNM

The short break after 3 hard weeks of competition and travel in January is over. The teams started arriving yesterday at Nové Město na Moravě, where BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon 7 starts on Friday with two mixed relays: a single mixed relay and the standard two-women, two-man version.

Ukraine and Russia Win Relay Gold

The last day of competition brought a really nice surprise for all the athletes and fans that were at the stadium today. For the first time in last 6 days there was a sun, clear skies and almost no wind on the shooting range. It was the perfect ending of the IBU OECH, especially for Ukraine's women and Russia's men's relay teams, which won Gold.

Gold for Russia in Junior Mixed Relay

The Russian team of Uliana Kaisheva, Victoria Slivko, Dmitrii Shamaev and Alexander Povarnitsyn won the mixed relay Gold medal in 1:15:24.0, with 9 spares and one penalty lap. France was second with one penalty and five spares, 8.2 seconds back. Ukraine finished third, using 7 spare rounds, 39.8 seconds behind. Austria finished fourth, Estonia fifth, and Poland sixth.

Gold for Russia’s Slepov and Latypov in Pursuits

Alexey Slepov of Russia scored his second victory in a row in men's pursuit 12.5K in 33:21.0. His great speed on the tracks and 3 penalties on the shooting range allowed him to finish with a flag, as Ekaterina Shumilova did few hours before. A little more than an hour after Slepov won gold, his junior teammate Eduard Latypov won his second medal and first Gold at the IBU OECH in junior men's pursuit in 35:19.5. This was despite his six penalties and second position after the last standing. The weather conditions have changed a little before the men started. The wind gusts on the shooting range were still hard, but the snow stopped, making the skiing easier.

IBU OECH Pursuits to Shumilova and Merkushyna

Russia's Ekaterina Shumilova moved from third in the sprint to first in today's women's 10K pursuit competition in 33:07.4, while Anastasiya Merkushyna of Ukraine scored her second win in a row, winning the junior pursuit in 35:52.9. Shumilova had two penalties while Merkushyna had with four in the junior competition. Strong and gusty winds have become a part and parcel for the IBU OECH in Otepää. The fifth day of competition, with four pursuits on the schedule, brought more snow as well. The combination of these two factors made it a tough day for everyone on the racks and the shooting range.

Varcin and Slepov Win IBU OECH Sprints

Coline Varcin of France needed 20:26.4 to claim her first career win with an IBU OECH sprint title while Alexey Slepov of Russia won men's 10K sprint in 22:38.0. Both shot clean. Varcin was just 17th in the individual competition with seven penalties, but today due to perfect shooting she had her personal best. Slepov with one victory and two second places in sprints on IBU Cups this season showed, unusual for him, perfect shooting, great speed on the last loop to finish first.
