Gold to Austria’s Schwaiger and Russia’s Kostyukov

Austria’s Julia Schwaiger shot clean to win the one-hour delayed Youth Women’s 10K Individual this morning in 32:58.7 at the IBU YJWCH in Presque Isle. In the afternoon, Russia’s Yaroslav Kostyukov had just two penalties, winning the Gold medal in the Youth Men’s 12.5K Individual in 35:22.6.

Pursuit Gold for USA’s Doherty and France’s Claude

Sean Doherty of the USA, with three penalties, won the Gold medal in the Youth Men's 10K Pursuit this afternoon in 28:51.8, his second Gold medal at the IBU YJWCH in Presque Isle, while Fabien Claude of France gave his country their first Gold medal when he won the afternoon Junior Men's 12.5K Pursuit in 33:02.8, with four penalties.

Gold for Italy’s Vittozzi and Kazakhstan’s Vishnevskaya

Both Gold medalists in the morning Women's Pursuit competitions were on the podium for the second day in a row. Italy's Lisa Vittozzi won her second Gold medal of these Championships claiming the Youth 7.5K Pursuit title, with seven penalties in 24:39.9 while Kazakhstan's Galina Vishnevskaya, after winning Silver in the Sprint claimed Gold in Junior Women's 10K Pursuit, with two penalties, in 32:36.3.

Russia’s Pavlova and Povarnitsyn Win Sprint Titles

Russia claimed both Junior Sprint World Championships today as Evgeniya Pavlova won the Junior Women's Sprint in 21:08.5, with clean shooting, and Alexander Povarnitsyn, with one penalty won the Junior Men's Gold medal in 24:45.8.

USA’s Doherty and Italy’s Vittozzi Take Youth Sprints

Sean Doherty of the USA and Lisa Vittozzi of Italy claimed the first two Gold medals at the 2014 IBU Youth/ Junior World Championships today, by winning the Youth Sprints. Doherty, with four penalties won the afternoon men's 7.5K title in 19:35, while Vittozzi won the morning 6K, with one penalty in 18:49.9. Both were Silver medalists in the 2013 Championships.

Germany Dominates Junior Women’s Relay

Only one spare round and a lead of more than 2 minutes showed the video wall in the stadium for Franziska Preuss, Vanessa Hinz and Laura Dahlmeier when they crossed the finish line of the junior women’s 3x6K relay at the IBU YJWCH in Obertilliach. While the Germans were alone at the front, the positions behind them were hard-fought for. In the end, Ukraine’s Yuliya Bryhynets, Alla Gylenko and Iryna Varvynets finished with 1 penalty and 7 spares 2:03.4 behind the Germans. Third place went to Viktoriya Perminova, Olga Podchufarova and Elena Ankundinova from Russia with two penalties and 9 spares, 2:24.8 back.

Norway Wins Relay Battle with Germany; France Third

Norway’s Aslak Nenseter, Fredrik Roervik and Vemund Gurigard won the youth men’s 3x7.5K relay at the IBU YJWCH in Obertilliach. The team needed six spare rounds and finished 8.3 seconds ahead of Germany with Maximilian Janke, Philip Horn and Niklas Homberg who needed 7 spare rounds. Third place went to France with one penalty and 9 spare rounds, 1:23.5 back. The defending champion French team consisted of Aristide Begue, Emilien Personnaz and Fabien Claude.

Gold for Russia, Silver for Ukraine

The Russian youth women’s relay team with Svetlana Mironova, Victoria Slivko and Uliana Kaisheva won the 3x6K relay at the IBU YJWCH in Obertilliach. Despite 11 spares they stayed 28.6 seconds ahead of Ukraine with Yuliya Zhuravok, Anastasiya Nychyporenko and Anastasiya Merkushyna. Ukraine used five spare rounds. Third place went to Switzerland with Tanja Bissig, Lena Haecki and Sabine Di Lallo with six spare rounds, 1:42.3 back. This is the first-ever relay medal and the first medal for the Swiss women at IBU YJWCH.

Loginov Wins Individual Gold

Russia’s Alexandr Loginov secured Gold in the junior men’s 15K individual with two penalties today in Obertilliach. Second place surprisingly went to Croatia’s Dino Butkovic with one penalty, 50.9 seconds back. Third was France’s Clement Dumont with one penalty, 56 seconds back.
