Dahlmeier Sprints to Gold Ahead of Podchufarova

Germany’s Laura Dahlmeier was strong on the tracks and shot clean during the junior women’s 7.5K sprint at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships. This performance secured her the World Championship title ahead of Russia’s Olga Podchufarova with three peanlties, 48 seconds back. Third place went to Austria’s Lisa Hauser with clean shooting, 57.9 seconds back, making the many local fans happy as well.

Gold for France’s Fabien Claude

Fabien Claude of France won the Youth Men’s 7.5K sprint at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships today. The new Gold medal winner had two penalties but was 3.6 seconds ahead of Sean Doherty of the USA who matched him at the shooting range. Third place went to Estonia’s Rene Zahkno with one penalty, 14.9 seconds back. This means that a total of five nations won medals on the first competition day.

Uliana Kaisheva Dominates Sprint

Russia’s Uliana Kaisheva, Youth Olympic Champion in Innsbruck last year, won the youth women’s 6K sprint at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. She had one penalty but was 1:00.5 faster than Lisa Vittozzi of Italy who shot clean. Third place went to Kaisheva’s teammate Svetlana Mironova with one penalty, 1:13.4 back.

World Champs for Youngsters Begins

16 competitions in 7 days, 37 nations with 226 male and 176 female athletes; all born in or before 1992, are some of the numbers that summarize the 2013 IBU Youth and Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. However, these championships of the future biathlon stars are more than a collection of numbers.

Pursuits Close IBU YJWCH

Clean-shooting Chardine Sloof of the Netherlands won her second Gold medal at these IBU Youth and Junior World Championships today in the junior women’s 10K pursuit. Her time of 34:52 gave the Gold over Olga Galich of Russia with 3 penalties, 32 seconds back. Iryna Kryuko of Belarus won the Bronze, with 3 penalties, 43.1 seconds back. The youth women’s 7.5K pursuit was won by Grete Gaim of Estonia with Julia Ransom of Canada and Germany’s Annika Knoll claiming the Silver and Bronze medals.

Gold for Ankudinova and Tsvetkov

The flags that were raised at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships today were all striped in white, red and blue as all of the medals went to France and Russia. Clean-shooting Elena Ankundinova of Russia won the junior women’s 7.5k sprint in 22:27.9. Silver went to France’s Anais Chevalier who also shot clean, 8 seconds back. Another Russian, Margarit Philippova won the Bronze with one penalty, 16.2 seconds back. Another Russian Maxim Tsvetkov won the junior men’s title in 25:14.0 with one penalty. France’s Florent Claude with one penalty and Simon Desthieux, who shot clean won the Silver and Bronze medals, 5.3 and 7.3 seconds back, respectively.

Two More Golds for Norway

Hilde Fenne of Norway took the World Championship title in the youth women’s 6k sprint at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships today. She finished in 18:48.3, with one penalty. Second place went to Niya Dimitrova of Bulgaria who shot clean, 19.6 seconds back. Third place went to Lisa Theresa Hauser of Austria with one miss, 53.1 seconds back. In the youth men’s sprint Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe won in dominating fashion in 19:15.0 with two penalties. Maksim Ramanouski of Belarus with one miss, 50.8 seconds back took the Silver. Bronze went to clean-shooting Artem Tyshchenko of Ukraine, 52.6 seconds back.

Close Relays; Ukraine and France Prevail

The Ukrainian youth women’s team won the 3x6K relay on a warm, sunny day with almost no wind today in Kontiolahti at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships. With only 4 spare rounds, they were 58.2 seconds ahead of Sweden, with 6 spare rounds. The Swedish team barely escaped with the Silver medal, as the Austrians; also with 5 spare rounds were just 1.2 seconds behind them. France won the youth men’s 3x7.5k relay with 11 spare rounds, as Sweden again claimed Silver with 12 spare rounds. Germany, with two penalties and 10 spare rounds won the Bronze medal.

Bartolmaes and Begue win Youth Individual Titles

Julia Bartolmaes of Germany won the youth women’s 10K individual championship today in Kontiolahti, finishing in 40:35.2 with three penalties. She was 18.9 seconds ahead of Galina Vishnevskaya of Kazakhstan with four penalties. Third place went to Norway’s Hilde Fenne with six penalties, 29.8 seconds back. Aristide Begue of France later won the youth men’s 12.5K individual in 40:45.8 with only one penalty. Maksim Ramanouski of Belarus claimed Silver with two penalties, 47.8 seconds back. Artem Tyshchenko of Ukraine finished third with three penalties, 1:14.9 back.

Obertilliach Building Up

The small village of Obertilliach, Austria is a popular training destination for many biathlon teams as well as a regular host of IBU Cup competitions during the winter. Obertilliach will host the 2013 IBU Youth and Junior World Championships and is now in the process of remodeling the venue.
