Kummer and Graf Bring Mass Start Gold to Germany

Luise Kummer of Germany took the Gold medal in the first ever mass start at the IBU OECH. Despite the strong wind gusts, she missed just two times to finish first in 36:05.1. Florian Graf, in the last competition of these Championships matched his teammate with the Gold medal in the men’s mass start with only penalty in 38:20.5.

IBU OECH Pursuit Gold to Skardino and Babikov

Nadezhda Skardino of Belarus won the IBU OECH Pursuit Gold medal this afternoon, with two penalties in 30:01.7 after a close battle with Germany’s Karolin Horchler. After sunset, Russia’s Anton Babikov outdueled teammate Evgeny Garanichev to take the men’s pursuit Gold medal, with one penalty in 30:01.5, just one-tenth-of-a-second ahead of Garanichev, who also had a single penalty.

Tyumen Training Today

After two days of competition in Tyumen at the IBU OECH, today was an off-day or a day for easy training, with two big competition days ahead on Saturday and Sunday. IBU Photographer Evgeny Tumashov made today a bit more of an artistic instead of sports day offering his impressions of the venue and the athletes.

Sprint Gold Medals to Nadine Horchler and Garanichev

Nadine Horchler of Germany despite one penalty won the Gold medal in women's 7.5 K sprint in 21:53.0 today at the IBU OECH. In the men's 10K sprint, hometown favorite Evgeniy Garanichev won his second Gold medal in two days, also with asingel penalty in 23:40.3.

Two Times Gold for Russia in Mixed Relays

Team Russia with Victoria Slivko and Anton Babikov first won the Gold medal in the single mixed relay with only four spares in 36:59.0. A few hours later, they made the local fans even happier with a second Gold medal in the hotly-contested regular mixed relay, winning in 1:10:56.4, just .1 seconds ahead of the surprising team from Slovakia. Anastasia Zagoruiko, Olga Iakushova, Matvey Eliseev, and Evgeniy Garanichev brough home Gold number two with one penalty and nine spare rounds.

IBU Open European Championships Starts in Tyumen

The IBU Open European Championships 2016 open tomorrow and will run through February 28 at the biathlon complex "Pearl of Siberia" in Tyumen, Russia in the southern part of Western Siberia.

Ukraine and Russia Win Relay Gold

The last day of competition brought a really nice surprise for all the athletes and fans that were at the stadium today. For the first time in last 6 days there was a sun, clear skies and almost no wind on the shooting range. It was the perfect ending of the IBU OECH, especially for Ukraine's women and Russia's men's relay teams, which won Gold.

Gold for Russia in Junior Mixed Relay

The Russian team of Uliana Kaisheva, Victoria Slivko, Dmitrii Shamaev and Alexander Povarnitsyn won the mixed relay Gold medal in 1:15:24.0, with 9 spares and one penalty lap. France was second with one penalty and five spares, 8.2 seconds back. Ukraine finished third, using 7 spare rounds, 39.8 seconds behind. Austria finished fourth, Estonia fifth, and Poland sixth.

Gold for Russia’s Slepov and Latypov in Pursuits

Alexey Slepov of Russia scored his second victory in a row in men's pursuit 12.5K in 33:21.0. His great speed on the tracks and 3 penalties on the shooting range allowed him to finish with a flag, as Ekaterina Shumilova did few hours before. A little more than an hour after Slepov won gold, his junior teammate Eduard Latypov won his second medal and first Gold at the IBU OECH in junior men's pursuit in 35:19.5. This was despite his six penalties and second position after the last standing. The weather conditions have changed a little before the men started. The wind gusts on the shooting range were still hard, but the snow stopped, making the skiing easier.

IBU OECH Pursuits to Shumilova and Merkushyna

Russia's Ekaterina Shumilova moved from third in the sprint to first in today's women's 10K pursuit competition in 33:07.4, while Anastasiya Merkushyna of Ukraine scored her second win in a row, winning the junior pursuit in 35:52.9. Shumilova had two penalties while Merkushyna had with four in the junior competition. Strong and gusty winds have become a part and parcel for the IBU OECH in Otepää. The fifth day of competition, with four pursuits on the schedule, brought more snow as well. The combination of these two factors made it a tough day for everyone on the racks and the shooting range.
