Germany Wins Women’s Relay

The German quartet of Luise Kummer, Franziska Hildebrand, Vanessa Hinz and Franziska Preuss won the women's 4 X 6K relay today, after taking the lead at the final standing stage. The German women had eight spare rounds to win in 1:11:40.4, with Belarus 21.1 seconds back with 10 spare rounds, and Czech Republic in third, 22.2 seconds back, with 9 spare rounds. Italy, Norway and Poland rounded out the top six in that order.

Two in a Row; Mäkäräinen Wins Sprint

Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen made it two wins in a row, taking the 7.5K sprint today in Hochfilzen to go with her pursuit victory last Sunday in Östersund. Mäkäräinen overcame a prone penalty with a fast final loop to claim the win in 20:55.6. She finished 10.45 seconds ahead of Italy's Karin Oberhofer, who shot clean. Oberhofer’s second place was a personal best; her previous best was 4th place in the Olympic Sprint at Sochi. Third went to Norway's Tiril Eckhoff, also with one penalty, 29.9 seconds back. Olga Podchufarova of Russia finished fourth, also with one penalty, 31.2 seconds back. Fifth went to Germany's Franziska Hildebrand, with one penalty, 36.9 seconds back. Her teammate Vanessa Hinz shot clean to finish in a personal best sixth place38.4 seconds back.

A small amount of fresh snow arrived in Hochfilzen on Thursday, making the stadium and surrounding forests look more wintery. That snow changed the conditions for the competitions today and over the weekend. "Hochfilzen Editor's Choice Preview" takes a look at the skiing and shooting range conditions that the athletes will face all weekend.

Up, Up and Away…Östersund to Hochfilzen

The 1747 km trip from Östersund to Salzburg can take anywhere from 2 days by car and ferry to just 2.5 hours on a non-stop charter flight. On Monday morning, about 90 athletes and officials took the quick route on a charter flight, making for an easy, relaxing, and at times fun trip from Scandinavia to Salzburg. This was followed by a short car transfer to Hochfilzen; everyone arrived in time for a light training session that afternoon. Our video, "Up, Up and Away...Östersund to Hochfilzen" chronicles what happened on that trip.

Pursuit Win for Kaisa

Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen won the women's 10K pursuit this afternoon, in 35:01.7, with three penalties. Ina close battle, Ukraine's Valj Semerenko finished .4 seconds ahead of Italy's Dorothea Wierer, both over 47 seconds behind the winner. Both women had four penalties. Fourth place went to Belarusian Darya Domracheva, with five penalties, 1:08.4 back. Fifth went to Slovenia's Teja Gregorin, with two penalties, 1:14.3 back. Sprint winner Tiril Eckhoff of Norway finished sixth, with seven penalties, 1:18.1 back.

Fourcade Doubles Up: Wins Pursuit

Martin Fourcade of France overcame four penalties to claim his second victory in a row, taking the men's pursuit in 33:54.9. Second went to Russia's Anton Shipulin, with one penalty, 10 seconds back. Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen with two penalties was third, 26.3 seconds back. Fourth went to Slovenia's Jakov Fak, with three penalties, 26.7 seconds back, just .1 seconds ahead of Austria's Dominik Landertinger, with one penalty. Germany's Simon Schempp finished sixth, with three penalties, 28.1 seconds back.

Tiril Eckhoff Skis to Östersund Sprint Win

Tiril Eckhoff's single penalty did not keep her from winning the women's 7.5K sprint this afternoon in Östersund. The Olympic Mass Start Bronze medalist finished in 21:35.5, putting her 4.6 seconds ahead of clean-shooting Veronika Vitkova of Czech Republic. Third went to Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen, with two penalties, 7.6 seconds back. Italy's Dorothea Wierer, who shot clean finished just 1.8 seconds behind Mäkäräinen, with Belarusian Darya Domracheva with one penalty, .1 seconds farther back in fifth place. Sixth went to Ukraine's Valj Semerenko, who also shot clean, 25.8 seconds back.

He’s Back… Fourcade Dominates Men’s Sprint!

France's Martin Fourcade recovered in style today from his surprising 81st place finish in Wednesday's men's 20K individual, by winning the men's 10K sprint by 28.3 seconds over Ondrej Moravec of Czech Republic. Jakov Fak of Slovenia finished third, 28.7 seconds back. All three men shot clean. Moravec's teammate, Michal Slesingr also shot clean in fourth place, 38.9 seconds back. Russian teammates Evgeniy Garanichev and Anton Shipulin finished fifth and sixth, 45 and 48.1 seconds back, with zero and one penalties, respectively.

A Roaring New Canadian Wax Truck

A quick glance abound the team compound; the big trucks of Germany, Russia, Sweden and France dominate the scene. Then parked next to the Russian Truck is a customized Toyota pick-up truck with Alberta, Canada license plates sporting the unique logo, "Canadian Wax Tech Crew" and next to it; a big trailer sporting Florida plates and a panoramic shot of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
