Oslo Holmenkollen...End of the Season

The final E.ON IBU World Cup starts this Thursday here in Oslo. This city looks like much of Europe has this winter, bereft of snow. Last week, in Kontiolahti, there was still some snow in the forest and along the roads. Here, the snow is on the tracks, plus a few large grayish piles surrounding parking areas.

Kontiolahti Wrap-up Video: Kaisa, Johannes & Martin

Three competition days this week in Kontiolahti produced two winners and an seasonal title. Johannes Thingnes Boe and Kaisa Mäkäräinen were the only people to stand on top of the podium, each winning two sprints and a pursuit, a double hat trick seldom seen.

Hometown Hat Trick for Kaisa

Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen won for the third time in a row here in her hometown, by taking the women's 10K pursuit in 30:52, with two penalties. She led from start to finish. Second went to Belarusian Darya Domracheva, who moved from 20th at the start and had just a single penalty, one minute back. Russia's Olga Zaitseva finished third, with five penalties, 1:54.3 back.

Windy Hat Trick for Johannes Boe

Johannes Thingnes Boe of Norway pulled off the hat trick by taking all three competitions here in Kontiolahti, culminating with his pursuit title today with five penalties, in 33:37.1. France's Martin Fourcade, with three penalties finished second, 16.3 seconds back, while Sweden's Bjorn Ferry finished third, with three penalties, 20.4 seconds back.

A Few Minutes with...Juliya Dzhyma

Juliya Dzhyma of Ukraine burst onto the World Cup scene this season like a lightning bolt from the East, picking up the first podium of her career with second in the Hochfilzen pursuit, just a day after fifth place in the sprint. She was so thrilled and confident that she commented, "I hope that fifth place will be my worst result of the season. I am expecting more." The previous season, as a 22-year-old, she was on the podium at the WCH with her Ukrainian teammates collecting second place in the women's relay.

Another Hometown Sprint Win for Kaisa

Kontiolahti’s hometown hero Kaisa Mäkäräinen, who lives in nearby Joensuu matched men’s sprint winner Johannes Thingnes Boe by winning both sprints here this week. Mäkäräinen, with one penalty finished in 20:53.6, 17.3 seconds slower than her time on Thursday. Second went to Norway’s Tora Berger, 6.2 seconds back with Gabriela Soukalova of Czech Republic third, 12.9 seconds back, shooting clean like Berger.

Two in a Row for Johannes Boe

Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe made it two in a row by taking the second sprint in Kontiolahti, once again shooting clean. His time of 24:03.5 was 18.5 seconds ahead of Russia's Alexander Loginov, who also shot clean in second place. Lowell Bailey of the USA, with the first podium of his career shot clean to finish third, 19.4 seconds back.
