Germany Wins Mixed Relay in Ridnaun

The German team of Annika Knoll, Karolin Horchler, Johannes Kuehn and Christoph Stephan won the last competition at IBU Cup 5 in Ridnaun in 1:26:39.0. The battle for the first place continued until the finish line between German and French athletes, but Christoph Stephan showed pretty good speed on the last loop and overtook Antonin Guigonnat on the finish line, winning just by .4 seconds. Both Germany and France used 9 spares. Russia finished third, using 11 spare rounds plus 2 penalty loops, 1:12.2 minutes behind. Norway was fourth, Ukraine finished fifth and sixth place went to Czech Republic.

Birkeland and Gössner Win Pursuits in Ridnaun

Finally the first pursuit on IBU Cup this season was held today. The pursuits in Duszniki Zdrój were canceled due to the bad tracks condition and luck of snow, but here the weather made a new surprise; too much heavy snow! Norwegian Lars Helge Birkeland, with perfect shooting scored his first personal win this season in the men's pursuit in 40:12.4. In the afternoon, Germany's Miriam Gössner added to her winning streak by claiming the women's pursuit in 34:28.5, with five penalties.

First Career Win for Fanny Horn in Sprint

Norway's Fanny Welle-Strand Horn won for the first time in her World Cup career by taking the women's 7.5K sprint in 21:07.4. She finished 3.4 seconds ahead of Belarusian Darya Domracheva. Both women shot clean. Third went to Horn's teammate Tiril Eckhoff, with one penalty, 9.3 seconds back. Valja Semerenko of Ukraine shot clean in fourth, 21 seconds back. Mari Laukkanen of Finland had a single penalty in fifth place, 22.7 seconds back. Clean-shooting Franziska Hildebrand of Germany finished sixth, 28.6 seconds back.

Slepov and Gössner Win in Ridnaun

The weather brings a lot of surprises this season. As in Oberhof and Ruhpolding, everything has changed in Ridnaun just in one day; sun and blue skies on training day were changed by snow and fog during competitions. 133 men competed today, trying to claim the victory. Alexey Slepov of Russia won the men's sprint at IBU Cup 5 in Ridnaun in 28:18.0, while Miriam Gössner of Germany scored her second sprint victory in a row in 23:51.7 with one penalty.

The spotlight this week may once again be on the French team and specifically Martin Fourcade, after his two victories last weekend in Oberhof. In the Relay While surveying the extremely favorable conditions on the shooting range here in Ruhpolding, his coach Stephane Bouthiaux and top rival Jakov Fak talked about “the man to beat this week.” Bouthiaux revealed that unlike in Oberhof, Fourcade will compete in this week’s relay competition in addition to the sprint and mass start.

Gössner Wins First Time in Season

The rain almost hasn't stopped in Duszniki Zdrój from yesterday's evening, bringing new challenges to the organizing committee and teams. By the jury decision due to the weather and track conditions the course in women's sprint has been changed; athletes ran six 1210m laps.

Russian Day at IBU Cup; 5 of 6 Podium Spots

Russia’s Irina Trusova won the first women’s sprint in 21:15.2, with really good speed on the tracks and perfect shooting, while Germany’s Florian Graf won the men’s with perfect shooting in 25:25.3. The weather conditions in Duszniki Zdrój were as tough for the Organizing Committee as the athletes today. The rain which started here last evening and stopped in the morning made the track conditions harder.

Tomorrow the IBU Cup 4 in Duszniki Zdrój, Poland will start the second part of the 2014-15 biathlon season. The IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships were held on this venue in 2010, but it's going to be the first winter IBU competition

Norway Wins Obertilliach Mixed Relay

The Norwegian team of Thekla Brun-Lie, Hilde Fenne, Vegard Gjermundshaug, Lars Helge Birkeland won the mixed relay of the last competition day on IBU Cup in Obertilliach. The Norway athletes had 5 spare rounds plus two penalty loops and finished in 1:10:39.83. Germany finished second, 29.7 seconds back while France was 52.6 seconds back in third. Ukraine was fourth, Russia finished fifth and Sweden sixth.
