Canmore Recovers; Damages Repaired

It has been slightly more than a month that the Canadian town Canmore, the host city of biathlon World Cups, the first IBU Cups outside of Europe and the 1988 Olympic Biathlon competitions was cut off due to heavy rain, resulting in the destruction of roads. Today, none of this is visible at the Nordic Center, the biathlon and cross country stadium above the town.

IBU Cup 2 relocated to Beitostoelen

The Norwegian Biathlon Federation announced in coordination with IBU that the IBU Cup 2 in the 2013-14 season will be relocated from Geilo to Beitostoelen. The IBU Cup is scheduled for the weekend of November 26-30, 2013. Beitostoelen is an experienced event host and this relocation now leads to a repeat of last season’s season opening with the IBU Cup athletes going from Idre in Sweden to the cross country and biathlon stadium of Beitostoelen in Norway.

Norway Tops Germany and Russia

The IBU Cup season ended with the women’s 4x6K relay today in Osrblie. There, Norway finished ahead of Germany and Russia. Like the Germans, the Norwegians needed 5 spare rounds and had no penalties. The decision about the victory only came at the last shooting and Germany in the end trailed by 49.2 seconds. Russia in third place had 14 spare rounds without penalty and was 1:47.0 back.

German Payback for Ostrov

The tip of Christoph Stephan’s foot was slightly ahead of that of Martin Eng from Norway and thus the German team won the men’s 4x7.5K relay at IBU Cup 7. This was payback for the lost sprint finish in the Mixed Relay at the IBU Cup in Ostrov, Russia in January. Russia won another sprint finish against Sweden and secured third place.

Second Victory and IBU Cup Total Score for Zagoruiko

Russia’s Anastasia Zagoruiko won the women’s 7.5K sprint after her victory in the 15K individual yesterday at the IBU Cup 7 in Osrblie. With clean shooting she needed just 21:26.4 to cover the course, putting her just 1.6 seconds faster than her teammate Ekaterina Iourieva who also cleaned. Only one-tenth-of-a second slower was Germany’s Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle with one penalty.

Armgren Wins Sprint by a Heartbeat

Sweden’s Ted Armgren celebrated his second victory at IBU Cup 7 in Osrblie today when he won the men’s 10k sprint by less than a second. He shot clean and after touring the course in 24:57.2, he was only four tenths-of-a-second faster than Russia’s Alexey Slepov. The Russian had one penalty and went out on for his final lap still 16 seconds behind the winner. Third place went to Germany’s Daniel Böhm with clean shooting, 6.4 seconds back, who secured the Sprint Total Score in the IBU Cup.

Victory and Individual Score to Zagoruiko

Flawless shooting brought victory in the women’s 15K individual to Anastasia Zagoruiko today. The Russian needed just 44:04 Minute to secure the victory in the IBU Cup Individual Score. Second went to Germany’s Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle with two penalties, 1:18.0 back. Her teammate Maren Hammerschmidt was third, with flawless shooting, 1:35.0 back.

Target Roof Collapses In Osrblie; Competition Postponed

The roof over the targets collapsed under masses of wet, fresh snow at Osrblie this afternoon, postponing the women's 15K individual until Friday at 12:30. Start lists will remain the same. Although the roof collapsed during the zeroing, no one was hurt. The OC and its volunteers are now working on repairing the damage.

Erlend Bjoentegaard Doubles Up

An attack that could not be countered secured the victory for Norway’s Erlend Bjoentegaard in the men’s 12.5K pursuit at the IBU Cup 6 in Martell. He put 3.8 seconds between himself and Alexey Volkov of Russia on the last uphill after the two had been together the entire competition, both picking up two penalties. Christoph Stephan of Germany finished third, with four penalties, 1:00.5 back. This is his first podium in more than 2 years.

Second Victory for Karolin Horchler

Karolin Horchler of Germany won the pursuit today at IBU Cup 6 in Martell after her sprint victory yesterday. She needed 35.16.6 to cover the 10K course with two penalties. Second was Russia’s Anastasia Zagoruiko with four penalties, 10.6 back. Third went to Russia’s Svetlana Sleptsova with four penalties, 25.3 seconds back.
