Introducing The Volunteers

The people in Whistler and Vancouver jokingly but lovingly call them “Smurfs” for their bright blue jackets which make them look a bit like the famous cartoon characters. Their outfit makes it easy for anyone who needs assistance to recognize them, the Olympic volunteers. About 25, 000 people from around the world, most of them from North America, came to Vancouver or Whistler to be part of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. They took time off from work; some travelled long distances and now stay in cramped living quarters. Still, they stay friendly and welcome the many guests from around the world. They do not just experience the Olympic Spirit but they themselves are a big part of it.

Russia Cruises to Relay Gold

The Russian team of Svetlana Sleptsova, Anna Bogaliy-Titovets, Olga Medvedtseva, and Olga Zaitseva took the Women’s 4 X 6K Relay Gold medal today, using just five spare rounds on their way to a 1:09:36.3 victory.

Ustyugov Perfect in Mass Start

Russia’s Evgeny Ustyugov captured the Gold medal in the 15K Mass Start competition this morning in 35:35.7. The 24-year-old Russian, with a clean shooting performance gave his country its first medal in the biathlon competitions this week at Whistler Olympic Park.

Best of the Best in Mass Start

The upcoming Mass Start competitions on Sunday at Whistler Olympic Park will be the biathlon showcase events of the season. The 30-competitor fields in both the Men’s 15K and the Women’s 12.5K will have the very best biathletes in the world on the starting line.

Ten Minutes with Elena Khrustaleva

Elena Khrustaleva of Kazakhstan won the Silver Medal in the Women’s 15K Individual at Whistler Olympic Park. Hardly anybody would have considered her among the favorites prior to the competition, despite her fifth place in the Sprint and her 11th place in the Pursuit. Biathlonworld.com talked to her about her background.

Svendsen Takes Gold in 20K

Emil Hegle Svendsen captured his second medal of these Olympic Winter Games with a victory in the Men’s 20K Individual today. Svendsen, who finished in 48:22.5, was almost perfect on the shooting range with just a single miss in the final standing stage. He previously won a Silver medal in the 10K Sprint on Sunday.
